A Short Film
After a hospice care emergency leaves no other alternative, CHARLOTTE, a businesswoman in the midst of several profound life changes, agrees to care for her estranged husband’s dying father for 24 hours.
TRANSITION is a spare, intimate short exploring life as a series of constant transitions and how the arc of it all is composed in each tiny moment.
Director’s Statement
TRANSITION was birthed through accompanying my father on his end-of-life journey. I wanted to build a film around the physical, undignified work of caregiving and how that can touch on the entire arc of a life.
Transition should feel observed, not explained. The camera moves from heat, speed and transaction into an old house of textures: recliner fabric, pill organizers, TV headphones, family photographs. The visual movement is from distraction toward stillness.
The surreal element — Charlotte seeing younger versions of herself — should play as a quiet rupture, not fantasy. The tone is funny, physically honest, intimate and unsentimental: a film about caregiving, marriage, the body, mortality and the terrifying grace of being briefly present.
Bio
Jacques Thelemaque is a Los Angeles-based writer-director and producer, and the co-founder and President of Filmmakers Alliance, the independent filmmaking collective he has led since 1993.
After studying at USC, he secured a three-picture writing deal with Imagine Entertainment. As a director, his credits include the feature The Dogwalker and the shorts Transaction, Infidelity (in equal parts), Egg and Love Without Socks; as a producer, his work spans Shock Television, Within, Midnight Movie and The Revenant.
He has written more than fifty short scripts for the 3rd Page writing collective and recently completed the feature screenplays Rust, Hurricane Jane and Connection. TRANSITION continues his focus on small, character-driven stories about the private moments that quietly change us.
Bio
Brigitte Bako is a Canadian actress, writer and producer whose career began with a role in Martin Scorsese's New York Stories. She went on to star opposite Ralph Fiennes in Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days, played the lead in I Love a Man in Uniform, and earned two Genie Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, including for Saint Monica.
She created, wrote, executive produced and starred in the Canadian hit comedy series G-Spot, and voiced Angela in Disney's Gargoyles and Monique Dupre in Godzilla: The Series. She currently writes and hosts the comedy podcast Lies My Vagina Told Me.
TRANSITION marks a return to the unguarded, lived-in dramatic work that first defined her career.
