Yes, we feel some presumption in declaring this fundraising drive a means to saving Independent Film, but we also feel strongly that by globalizing our work, we are doing precisely that. There is indeed much great support for Independent Film, but all of it comes through "closed" systems of support. Meaning, there is ultimately someone (or some group) sitting at the top of a pyramid deciding whom shall pass through to receive that support. Although there is value and reason in these type of systems and they do serve a purpose, there are is another way. And it needs to exist, especially as channels to funding and distribution grow narrower and narrower in the closed system.
Filmmakers Alliance's "open" system of support allows filmmakers to support themselves...and each other. It also allows them to build their own base of public support. In this way, they are directly rewarded for great work and initative, rather than finding themselves shut out from support - no matter how good their work - by a necessarily exclusive "closed" system. And that open system allows for a greater multitude and variety of aesthetic perspectives, cultural concerns and thematic issues - keeping independent film truly independent in its vision and execution.
